Historical Sawfish Photos

This 12' 9" (3.9 m) smalltooth sawfish was caught and landed in July, 1988 off the Venice Pier.  The angler was fishing at night for large sharks when the fish bit the chunk of ladyfish used as bait.  The fight took more than two hours before the fish could be landed onshore.

On the following morning, the sawfish was weighed at nearby Sharky's Restaurant, and while part of the fish was still laying on the deck, the scale registered 410 pounds (185.7 kg).  The angler received several requests from people interested in purchasing the fish or its saw, however he decided to keep the saw as a souvenir of this once-in-a-lifetime catch.
